How to add a place: A step by step guide

Hi there!

In this guide I will show you how to add a place to the shidduch shuk – shidduchs shuk style.

First, some background.

The shidduch shuk uses a software program called WordPress to organize and present information on it’s website. WordPress, like all CMS which stands for content management systems, have a Front-end, the side of the website people see when visiting shidduchshuk.com and the Back-end, which is the side of the website where the information is added and published.

Once someone is logged in to the website as an administrator or editor, going from the back-end to the front-end is simple. From the front-end you can click the edit page button. From the backend you can click on the permalink to take you to the front-end of the page.

On the back-end of the page you want to edit there are two ways you can edit the information. Through Visual, which is like Word, and through Code, which has the coded format and some of the formatting and styling.

The front end looks nicer than the visual back-end because it is styled and formatting using css. These are special words placed before sections of the code which hints the browser to another file to style it in a way specified in the css customizer.

The code section uses a language called HTML to tell the browser how to place words and symbols on the screen of the user using tags or special words surrounded by arrows like this <div>. Every tag has an opening tag and a closing tag. The closing tag tells the browser when to stop making a section, paragraph, or sentence. The closing tags have a slash in it to differentiate from an opening tag like this </div>.

Words and colors are broken up into blocks of sections, paragraphs, and lines.
Sections are called dividers and are created with div tags or <div> and </div>.
Small paragraphs are called p and are created with p tags or <p> and </p>.
Lines are called span and are created with span tags or <span> and </span>.

When styling blocks we put that block in the css “class” which you want it to look like.
This is done by adding class= like this: <div class=”place”> Blah blah blah </div>.

Adding a Place

All new place will be transferred from the email submissions to the Coming Soon page.

Places will be added to the site from the Coming Soon page based on the score people rate it (1-10).

After a place is added to its page or updated the change should be noted in the Updates page (aka Place Updates Page) and removed from the Coming Soon page.

  1. Copy the name of the place to be added, to the search box on the upper right corner of the home page on the front end. This will tell if the place is already listed on the site. If it is, it might need to be copied to another city.
  2. If it isn’t listed already: Google the place name and the vicinity of the place.
  3. Go to the page where the place should be added.
  4. Click on the Code tab to bring you to the Code version of the site.
  5. The place are listed in alphabetical order. Go to the place right before or after where you will add the new place.
  6. Click the small arrow before the div tag of the old place to collapse the old place.
  7. Copy the small collapsed line of code.
  8. Paste the code where the new place goes. This will expand the new code.
  9. Change the name of the place so you don’t get mixed up with the old place.
  10. Change the Like Button identifier and Comment box code to the last 5 digits of the new places phone number.
  11. Go to this Visual side and find the place you are trying to add.
  12. Change the information like address, website, phone number, hours, etc. to match the new place.
  13. Download pictures from the google search and replace them in the new place.

Make sure to mark the changes on the updates page and delete the new place from the coming soon page. If the new place shows with errors its probably because wordpress added too many div tags than necessary which throws everything off. To ix, you will have to find and delete the extra div tag.
